A pair of babies' knitted silk full thumb mittens, circa 1840, knitted in imitation of tartan, with black and white elasticated wrists, 9 cm long. The gloves were probably made at the time that Queen Victoria made Balmoral Castle her holiday residence and in so doing made all things tartan highly fashionable, be it dress fabrics, hat ribbons or interior furnishings.

Part of the Collection donated to the Livery in 1959 by the late Robert Spence. Conserved 1995 - 1999 with help from NHLF.
